We specifically aim at fostering the long-term survival of the species in Nigeria<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Methods<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ten rivers, the Abakpa, Eniong-Creek, Calabar, Cross, Ikpa, Ikpan, Imo, Niger, Qua Iboe, and Kwa, were surveyed in dry and rainy seasons together with contact visits, clandestine investigations, use of informants, and interviews of hunters and fisher-folks for 10 years (2009 \u2013 2019) within known manatee habitats in five states of southern Nigeria. Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers are major focal areas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2084 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/biodiversitypreservationcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Methods-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"721\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biodiversitypreservationcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Methods-2.png 721w, https:\/\/biodiversitypreservationcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Methods-2-300x183.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>African Manatees were seen and measured<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2085 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/biodiversitypreservationcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/African-Manatees-were-seen-and-measured.png\" alt=\"African Manatees were seen and measured\" width=\"729\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biodiversitypreservationcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/African-Manatees-were-seen-and-measured.png 729w, https:\/\/biodiversitypreservationcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/African-Manatees-were-seen-and-measured-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Results<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Our preliminary results show that African manatees face diverse threats from intense hunting for bushmeat trade, traditional medicine, juju animism, habitat destruction, fisheries-bycatch, infrastructural development, and petroleum-based pollution<\/li>\n<li>During the project period, we documented over 500 manatees killed or captured alive as well as documented licensed hunting of manatees as rogue animals over two decades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, documented threats differed significantly by rivers and states and included illegal hunting using traps, harpoons, specialized nets, pit-traps, as well as fisheries-bycatch and manatee mortality due to entrainment in infrastructural construction. Finally, feasible locations for Marine \/ Estuarine Protected Areas and alternative livelihood programs to reduce manatee hunting, bycatch and habitat destruction need to be identified in southern Nigeria.
